My father-in-law was the Methodist minister for both the Santa Paula and Fillmore, Ca. churches. When visiting them we would often take hikes into the high desert-like environment where lupin grew in patches of one huge plant…up to 10 feet in diameter and 3 feet high. Add the Indian Paintbrush and Owl’s Clover, Fiddlehead’s and of course California Poppies and it was a great place to hike. By the time we married they had taken the church in Bishop, Ca. and we were married there by his dad. We spent the next week hiking around the high deseert up there…really interesting topography. Just a sloping bed of decomposed granite leading up to the foot of the Sierra’s, a literal wall of granite.
I love the area around Bishop and the eastern Sierra. Hope to visit it again someday. Last time I was there, I went to Manzanar and oh my, what a place. Perhaps the best historical interpretation site I’ve ever visited.
