What an interesting and complex shot! Shelf fungus on the left? If not, looks like beak, with eye the knothole 2 o’clock from “beak”…there goes my imagination rambling off again….anyway, I like this. Are the horizontal slits due to the bark beginning to shed? If so, never seen that pattern in shedding before…used to patches or slabs. Maybe indicates fast growth?

I think it’s a water birch tree and yes, I think that’s a shelf fungus but I like your story better!
