Last week I was up late and had a great opportunity to photograph the Milky Way. It was absolutely lovely. And once my eyes adjusted, it was not truly dark at all. I love that my camera captured the air glow caused by ‘the light of excited atoms’! I also love how the clouds flirted with the Milky Way and I love the reflections of the night sky on the lake. It was a really lovely night and I was lucky to be there.

  1. Amazing! What are those “lines” of light visible in a few of these photos?

    • Thank you.
At least one of the lines is a shooting star. Others may be satellites.

  2. Looks like a wonderful night under the stars! Until I found out air glow was a real thing, I kept wondering why I was getting this “unnatural” green color in some of my night photos and tried to photoshop it out! Your photo with primarily air glow beautifully captures the phenomenon.

  3. Breathtaking! Stunning photos.

Teri- Both Jim and I are entranced by these photos. They are amazing. Looks like galaxies, Milky Way, shooting stars and northern lights all in one night. Last week we took his grandson to the DSM Science Center and saw a film presentation on dark matter. Your photos surpass the quality of the photos they were showing. Thank you for sharing!

  4. Thank you Corly! It’s so good to get the kids out and learning about science. Keep up that good work.
