Winter means finding a meal is hard so this Sharp-shinned Hawk spent time scoping out the bird feeders last week. They didn’t find food that time.

This Sharp-shinned Hawk visited the feeders in a snow storm earlier this week. It has been coming around for a while. All the little birds scatter when the hawk arrives.

Winter birding is not for the faint of heart. The weather is generally not favorable for optics and cameras and the birds can be few and far between. Feeders have the most diversity. Here are a few I’ve seen in December and January.

We’ve had some cold weather and some snow, but not enough to make it feel like real winter. And now the afternoon temperatures are going well above freezing so the small amount of snow will be alternating between melting and freezing. No one likes that. Sky doesn’t like temperatures below ten so last week I took her to town and she picked out a nice red and black plaid fleece coat. I think she likes it when it’s cold. Hopefully it will get cold again and she can wear it some more this winter. Luna says she doesn’t like the sticky snow. It clings to her feet and legs and makes ice between her toes. She probably should get her legs shaved like a poodle. But with the current conditions, that won’t be a problem. The birds appreciate our feeders and give us endless hours of entertainment. Who needs a tv?

This young female Sharp-shinned Hawk prowled the bird feeders earlier this week. I didn’t see it catch anything but I have noticed that the quail numbers are dwindling. I think there were eight last month. Then there were five. Today I only saw three. Everybody’s got to eat.
