We got up early for sunrise, looking west at the Sierras and also east to the Great Basin. We had a long walk in the younger bristlecone pine trees and we stayed outside in the dark to photograph the Milky Way over the Sierras. We were high enough in the White Mountains that we could see the light pollution of southern California spilling over the Sierras and my milky way disappeared into some low clouds. Still beautiful.
What’s it like to stand on the edge of a rocky outcropping waiting for sunrise on a cold September morning? Is it worth it? Were the dogs bored? I love the way the warmth of the sun spreads across the mountains, bathing them in its light leaving behind the blue hour of dawn.
The light at the ends of the day is the very best. A person needs to walk at dusk and get up before the sun rises. We walked every evening amidst the rock formations and Mary and I got up at 4:30 am twice to capture sunrise on the snow-capped Sierras including Mt Whitney. It was magical. Except for that morning when the wind howled and we could not feel our fingers before the sun finally arrived! Still, the scenes before us were breathtaking.
Our second site had the best sunrises and sunsets. That incredible October light. All these images were made from our lovely lakeside campsite. My girls look good in the evening light.
