Sometimes we were overwhelmed by the sheer number of people out looking at fall colors, stopping in the middle of the road, walking without noticing cars coming and going. It seemed like every pretty place with aspens had people everywhere like ants at an anthill. One evening we found a nice, quiet place to walk in aspens along a creek just as the sun went down.

One of the evenings at Harts Pass, the girls and I enjoyed a walk to the lookout.

The light at the ends of the day is the very best. A person needs to walk at dusk and get up before the sun rises. We walked every evening amidst the rock formations and Mary and I got up at 4:30 am twice to capture sunrise on the snow-capped Sierras including Mt Whitney. It was magical. Except for that morning when the wind howled and we could not feel our fingers before the sun finally arrived! Still, the scenes before us were breathtaking.

The girls and I took the camper out for one night (it was supposed to be two nights) as a shakedown cruise before we get fully into camping season. Sadly, there is a water leak to be fixed. Wish us luck on that. Because of the leak and windy weather we returned after one night.

We chose a campground about 100 miles from home, far enough away to seem really different from here but close enough for a short trip. It is located along the Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail, a very dramatic landscape. You can learn more about the historic floods here.

After dinner, the girls and I enjoyed a long walk through the basalt coulees and sagebrush, listening to birds and searching for tiny wildflowers. Sunset and moonrise were delightful. The landscape is beyond amazing and the skyscape was equally lovely that night.

Deep green moss. Old pilings. Ferns growing out of a tree trunk. A blue chair. Beach sunsets.
