We spent a few days at the beach, mainly to dig for razor clams but also for a much needed change of scenery for me. Winter has gone on for five months and I needed to see something besides snow and ice. The dogs were happy too. Willow got to run and run and swim in a river too. She’s a natural in the water. And all the smells! It was very stimulating for a seven month old puppy. Sky liked it too. They made new dog friends everywhere we went. And they found sticks. And a floor mat from someone’s car.

This juvenile Bald Eagle seemed pretty bedraggled.

We went to the beach to dig razor clams and for a change of scenery. The weather was good for about a day and a quarter and then it was all wind, rain and wind-driven hail. Oh well. We got lots of clams and the change of scenery.

Is there anything better than a beach sunset?

Sanderlings are small shorebirds widely distributed around the world. They nest in the arctic tundra and winter on temperate and tropical sandy beaches around the world. They feed by running down the beach following the waves and collecting small stranded animals or probe for prey hidden in the sand.

I got to watch this flock as it foraged on the beach where we stayed last month. Fun birds to watch and photograph.
