Uh oh. You can tell that this winter is going to be a long one. The lack of snow is bringing out some real creativity in the valley.

Yesterday Jennifer asked me if I was going to race and I had not a clue what she was referring to. Then she said ‘bring your camera to TwispWorks at noon’. Hmmm. MA knew about the race too and apparently was thinking about entering. She and I had a dog walk this morning and, well, we were a little late but we figured, like many events around here, it might not start quite on time. We were wrong. By the time we got there, most contestants had already had their practice run and their competitive run. MA was convinced to join in the fun and did really well, coming in third place out of about a dozen qualifiers. There were a few rules. Knocking over a cup would cost you time. Going off course would get you disqualified. Costumes were encouraged.

Every winter the Methow Valley Nordic Club sponsors the always popular Doggie Dash in Winthrop near the Town Trailhead. It is one of the most fun events of the year for dog lovers and their friends. In addition to being a race, it’s also a costume contest. Many people put more effort into their costume design than the race itself in hopes of taking home the traveling trophy – a magnificent golden poodle! The race categories included kids, adults with big dogs, adults with little dogs and skijoring teams. Generous sponsors provide lots of doggie treats and prizes.

This puppy really has a ‘game face’

I’m always partial to doodles

What can I say about this?

Luna is having second thoughts

And the race is on!

The little jockey is being followed by the super hero team from Mazama

It’s ok to fall and get up – you cannot let go of your dog though

And she’s off again

Normally mild mannered Kristen turned into a new woman when she donned the roller girl outfit!

At the starting line, Luna is still thinking……

Looks like Trip is also thinking about other stuff

There’s a good team

Trip – don’t look at the girls over there

This is just before Luna ran over to me and sat down.

This weekend MVSTA is hosting the Methow Valley Pursuit – two days of Nordic ski races. Today is a skate race with skiers going the 30k from Mazama to Winthrop. It is a slow course today with lots of new snow and more falling during the race. Yesterday was the classic race that began and ended at Winthrop’s Town Trailhead. During the race I helped with traffic control where the trail crosses Twin Lakes Road. In between cars, I made a few images.

Nicely groomed trails ready for racers and other skiers

This fellow biked up from town

He just wanted to go skiing. The course was open to any skiers – we just asked that they watch out for the racers

And off he goes

Lots of really excellent racers in this field

Great fashions

All ages

And always – having fun!
